All Current listings of Haiku land

Haiku is located in the northern portion of Maui in a tropical rain forest.  This beautiful rural area is filled with lush vegetation, tropical flowers and lots of streams and waterfalls.  In the 1960's the hippies found Haiku, they loved it because they could live off the land quite easily.  It was a great place to raise a family, most everything grows well in Haiku, with lots of rainfall and sun also.  Alot of pakalolo (marijuana) was grown in Haiku during the 1960's- mid 1980's. Haiku real estate was extremely reasonable during this time, as most people wanted to live in the drier parts of Maui.

Agriculture has been a big part of Haiku's history for centuries, the native Hawaiians lived along these fertile streams growing their staples and harvesting from the streams and ocean.  In the 1860's two missionaries sons (Samual Alexander and Henry Baldwin)  planted sugar in the region.  This was the begining of Sugar on Maui.  In 1876 an elaborate ditch system was built  that delivered water from the Haiku area to the central Maui area.  This ditch system still exists today and is still being used. (EMI or East Maui Irrigation system)  In 1904 a cannery was built in Haiku and the pineapple industry took off.  Most Haiku land has been planted with pineapple or sugar cane at one time or another.  From 1913-1966 the Kahului Railroad ran from Kahului, through Paia and to Haiku, evidently it came through Haiku twice a day and had to cross a tresle bridge over Maliko Gulch. I find it amazing to imagine  that a train could pass over this rugged Haiku land

Haiku is a melting pot with celebrities in mansions to regular folks in little plantation homes. Haiku real estate ranges from very reasonable acreage to multi million dollar Haiku homes with natural pools and waterfall nearby. The shoreline in Haiku is mostly cliffy, so there are no easily accessable beaches, but the Haiku oceanview homes have spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean.  Some Haiku homes and Haiku land are quite affordable for Maui standards.  Haiku is a place that has few stores, a small post office, and a fairly tightly knit community.   I invite you to come visit Haiku, Huelo area, it is a very special place, who knows, you may fall in love with it, like so many others.
