Maui has had a longstanding love affair with horses. Upcountry horse properties are located in Makawao, Olinda, Kula, Pukalani, Ulupalakula and Keokea. There are some great East Maui horse properties also but it is wetter in that area and it is best to have shelters for your horses if keeping them in Haiku, Huelo, Nahiku, Hana or Kipahulu. There are very few horses in the South Maui area, the horses that are on this side of the island are mostly in Makena. West Maui horse properties are mostly in Laniopoko and Napili. You will find Central Maui horse properties in Waihee, Waiehu and Kahakuloa. There are not many Maui ranches that ever go on the Market, but many properties that would be well suited for ranching here.

Horses were introduced to the islands in 1803, they were brought over on a merchant ship and given as a gift for the King. In the late 1800's a race track was established on Kaanapali Beach in Maui, it was located between the present day Kaanapali Beach Hotel and the Westin Maui Resort. The name if the race track was Koko O Na Moku Horse racing track and it's last official race was in 1918. There was also a race track in Kahului (near where Jack in The Box is). In 1959 a bill was proposed to allow horse racing again on Maui, but it failed to pass. In the early 1900's the sport of Polo was established on the island of Maui, the old polo fields of Hali'maile was often where this sport was played.
